Description

  • OT-friendly fine motor practice: These 1″ counters are just right for pincer grasp, three-jaw chuck, and controlled release—great for building the small hand skills needed for handwriting and self-care.
  • Hand-eye coordination + visual-motor integration: Picking up, placing, lining up, and matching bears supports accurate placement, visual scanning, and “look-then-do” coordination.
  • Bilateral coordination + midline crossing: Use one hand to stabilize a cup or sorting tray while the other transfers bears, or place bears on the opposite side to encourage reaching across the body.
  • Executive function through play: Sorting, patterning, and following “first/then” directions build attention, working memory, planning, and flexible thinking in a low-pressure way.
  • Sensory bin compatible: Add to rice, beans, kinetic sand, or pom-poms for extra tactile input while keeping hands busy and engaged during OT activities.
  • Easy to grade for different skill levels: Start with large containers and short rounds, then progress to smaller cups, tweezers/tongs, timed challenges, or multi-step sorting rules.

Three Bear Family® Baby Bear™ Counters are a classic OT manipulative for building foundational skills through play. Kids love the bright colors, and therapists love how easy it is to turn “just playing” into purposeful practice—grasping, sorting, transferring, and following directions. Use them for quick fine motor warm-ups, visual-motor stations, or calm-down table tasks that support focus and self-regulation.

How OTs use them

  • Fine motor warm-up: “Pick and place” 10–20 bears into a muffin tin or ice cube tray before handwriting or cutting tasks.
  • Grasp strengthening: Transfer bears using fingers only, then upgrade to tweezers/tongs for added resistance and precision.
  • In-hand manipulation: Hide 2–3 bears in the palm and bring one to the fingertips at a time to place into a target.
  • Visual-motor games: Copy a color pattern, build rows, or complete “find and match” scavenger hunts in a sensory bin.
  • Self-regulation breaks: Use quiet sorting tasks as a structured reset between higher-demand activities.

Details: 102 bears in 6 colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple). Each bear measures about 1″ tall. Includes a storage bucket and Activity Guide.

Safety: Small parts. Choking hazard. Recommended for ages 3+.
